Editing - iMovie

Storyboard

Garageband

To create the music for our coursework we decided to find uncopyrighted music on the internet through sites such as SoundCloud and YouTube. Once we'd found suitable pieces for before, during and after the montage, we decided to edit the sound so the soundtrack was parallel to actions on screen.

As an example, we'll look at the first piece of music featured in the film opening which was edited the most.

Before creating the piece, I had to import the music from SoundCloud that we'd saved as a file onto Garageband. After doing this, I listened through and liked a specific section which I thought worked well with the scene. The section was not long enough however to simply play through the scene therefore I had to copy and paste sections so that it repeated for a little longer until there was a break in the scene that allowed for a different section of the music to fit in nicely.

To do this I had to firstly split the clip around the section I wanted to repeat so it was a separate clip to copy.

I then copy and pasted this section where I needed it and compared it to how long the scene was (i.e. how long I wanted the section of music to bit to be parallel). I then repeated coping and pasting as many times as I needed.

When the piece was complete I saved in iLife preview so I could import it into iMovie.

From here, I could edit how it sounded, for example, I added a muffled effect on the first section and made the music fade in.

I used these methods for the rest of the process when creating the soundtrack for our film opening.

Re filming Shooting day 1

After filming the bedroom scene and began to edit our footage we thought the scene was too long and boring. So we reviewed what we had done and decided to re film this scene. We wanted to make it shorter and faster so that the pace of the opening picked up quicker. I had to re film by myself with our protagonist.
We changed several things from the original footage including:

  • Camera angles - We chose to focus more on having more close up shots rather than a continueous shot.
  •  Editing - We preferred to have jump cuts rather than having it as a continueous shot as editing proved this to be boring and slow paced.
  • Lighting - Originally our protagonist was sitting with her back to the window which meant her face was in shadow and so when it came to re filming I made her instead sit facing towards the window so that her face was in light. This looked much better from what we originally had and the scene wasn't so dim. Also, it made it easier to film as we could see the laptop screen better and without having to position the camera awkwardly.

We kept the costuming, mise en scene and plot the same however for the bedroom scene.

As well as this we had to add a small scene into our opening to cover that I forgot the bag prop for the shooting day in London. To cover this we thought that our protagonist should ditch her bag as it was a hassle. It fitted into the plot and seemed more realistic as she wouldn't have taken a bag to the riots however it was not necessary. It also made the transition better between the bedroom scene and to the tube scene.

Creating Our Typography

I created some possible typography for our film opening. I used the software Photoshop in order to do this. I used images from both the internet and that I have taken myself. I used an online font website called DaFont which we have previously researched to create different typography.

Here I used Banksy's famous image of a thug but replaced the flowers with a graffiti can as our opening features graffiti and is considered urban art which links with our genre. In the background is the London skyline as well at the bottom of the font. The font is quite simple and bold as I learnt this about urban drama typography from previous research. I kept it black and white so that the images would get confusing to look at.

With this text I used my own photo (far left) of our protagonist but edited it so that it is black and white. I once again kept it black and white as I thought colours would be too distracting and confusing. I used graffiti font for the text 'Rock & Bottles' to bring in an urban theme. I once again used the London skyline and an image of a gang to relate to our plot.

Here I focussed more so on graffiti and used an image of a spray can with the title of our opening to bring in the urban theme. I used colour this time as it is a simpler design. I thought the paint splatters were suitable and the colour makes it more visually appealing/exciting. The font is bold which is suitable for urban drama typography.

This font shows once again our main protagonist and uses graffiti to make it fit the urban drama genre. I included colour as it makes it more interesting to look at. The title is in a bold font and stands out and fits as an urban drama typography as my research showed me font should be bold and stand out.
